Valencia Test - MotoGP - 2010 - Featured Photos

When I try to explain Valentino Rossi to people who don't follow motorcycle racing, I say, think Elvis or the Beatles meets sports athlete. People go nuts over that guy. Now when you add to that, the Italian guy takes his first ride on an Italian GP bike.... absolute madness. The air was electric with anticipation, in the stands and on pit lane. There were moments that I wondered if that fever pitch would result in someone running you over just to get a shot of Rossi.
Then, the madness sorted of turned into a bit of boredom with the two and half hour weather delay. Any rider who stepped out of the garage was subjected to some of that feeding frenzy, because it was like oh thank god, something to photograph. The lull in the storm ended when the man in black and florescent yellow finally rolled out on the black Duc. I don't think i'll ever see so much excitement for just a few laps. That is unless Rossi makes some other monumental race team change. I'm thinking it'd have to be something along the lines of F1 Ferrari to duplicate or top that.
I may be jaded in my somewhat young age, but even I had to admit, it was a day I will remember. Here are my favorites from that day...

Blue Angels - Miramar Air Show 2010
Blue Angels - MCAS Miramar Airshow - 2010 - Featured - Images by andrea wilson
Back to my roots...
According to my Dad, I was almost born in an airplane. Although practically speaking, I'm pretty sure there'd be time to land and get mom to a hospital before that happened. So born in a hospital like most of us, but as soon as I could tag along for a flight, I was in the back seat of the plane in my bassinet. I think I had more general aviation hours as a toddler than most adults will ever see.
Before I started taking pictures of motorbikes I wanted to be a pilot. Plan was to get my four year (ok six year) degree and go into the military to be a pilot. I went to a lot of air shows during my high school and college years because it was sort of like a job fair...and ok, lots of fun as well. I took a ton of photos with my Canon Rebel, mostly of static displays because I only had a 28-135mm lens. At the time I didn't take it seriously, but I loved it. So even though the race track was where I developed as a professional photographer, taking photos at air shows was where the photographer in me was born.
It's not that often that I get a chance to go to air shows anymore, because the race season keeps me pretty busy. I've been lucky that my schedule the last two years in a row has allowed me to go because I still love them. I didn't shoot a lot this year, but here is a selection of my favorite photos of the Blue Angels on friday. Hope you enjoy them.

A change of pace from the asphalt... Here's a selection of my favorite photos from the last round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.
If you haven't been to an outdoor national, it's definitely worth the price of admission. It's pretty incredible to get an up close and personal look at how fast these guys are going and the conditions they are riding in. Maybe it's the sound of the bikes, or maybe there is a bonus to being covered in a fine coat of dust that adds to the experience....but Tv really just doesn't do it enough justice.
It's speed, it's raw physical power and endurance, and it involves two wheels... so i love it. And love photographing it.

Here's some of my favorites from a rough weekend that was a result of sleep deprivation, a tire blowout on the rental car, and a broken camera. But even though it was a bad day at the office, at the end of the day it was MotoGP weekend at one of the prettier settings in the US. So... not so bad in the grand scheme of things. :) Hope you all enjoy the photos.

Road Atlanta, one of my favorite tracks to shoot. Elevation changes, cool angles, and believe or not, that georgia clay is good for something besides staining your clothes. Top it all off with nice weather, more good racing and some milestones reached, it was pretty much everything a photographer could ask for from another weekend at the office.
These are my favorite images from the weekend... Hope you enjoy them!

Fontana 2010 - Round 2 - AMA Pro Road Racing - Featured - Images by andrea wilson
Fontucky, as we affectionately call it... This year's race weekend can be summed up as high wind drama, Tommy Hayden's first Superbike win, a kinder, friendlier DMG/AMA, and great racing. Wind gusts of up to 50mph, not that far off from the inaugural Indy MotoGP race, shut on track action down until the afternoon. Fortunately, the wind died down enough and they were able to secure the air fences and we were able to get all the races underway. Instead of hurry up and wait it was wait and hurry up...which makes things interesting fast, but for a photographer the silver lining was later races meant better light.
The highlight for me was Tommy Hayden's maiden Superbike win. Been documenting the Haydens for quite a few years now...So happy to see Tommy get that win and end all the "when you gonna get that first sbk win" questions. If I had a crystal ball I'm sure it'd predict many more wins this season.
Even though only two rounds are in the books, I have to say what a difference a year makes. The morale in the paddock is much better. What I like the best about the new management is the focus on safety is back. A year ago when there was rain in the morning at Fontana, the position was we don't care what you say you're racing. This year with the wind, the position was if it's not safe we won't race, but we are hoping to get the races in and we are looking at different scenarios to get all the races in this weekend. There seems to be a lot of positive shifts in the right direction. Add to that great racing, makes this season so much more enjoyable.
I'm looking forward to Road Atlanta, one of my favorite tracks to shoot here in the US. Until then... Hope you guys enjoy my favorite photos from Fontana.

Daytona Short Track - AMA Pro Flat Track - 2010 - Featured Gallery
Daytona Short Track - AMA Pro Flat Track - 2010 - Featured - Images by andrea wilson
Dirt track... my favorite thing about Daytona this year. A nice new track that was well lit, speedway representatives that were nice and accommodating, and of course guys going around in circles with no front brakes. What more could a photographer ask for?
Even though I added more to my workload....turned into three 12 hour days of shooting....and it was freezing cold...mid to high 30's both nights... I was so glad I went.
Flat track racing is one of my favorite forms of racing to watch and to photograph. If you love motorcycles, you love flat track racing. If you don't love motorcylces, you'd probably love flat track racing. It really is quite a sight to see. Fast paced, lots of action, and easy to follow makes it a great spectator sport.
These were my favorite photos from both nights of racing. I hope you enjoy them.

Barber, what interesting weekend... most notable for Hacking's incredible save (if you haven't seen it yet, find it on utube, it is amazing), Young loses part of his pinky, and the big tornado scare. Or at least for this Southern California girl, the words "a tornado has touched ground and is headed straight for Barber Motorsports Park" is cause for a scare. Fortunately we did not get swept away to OZ by a big tornado and we were able to finish the race weekend. Here are my favorite images from the weekend. Enjoy!
